How I Got Started as an Artist

It’s never too late to embark on a new creative journey. I’m living proof of that. At the age of 53, I decided to take the plunge. I started art classes with an online tutor, a decision that has transformed my life in ways I never imagined.

My painting journey began with the talented Cypriot artist Elli Lestas. Her mentorship was invaluable. I learned a solid foundation in drawing and painting techniques. As I honed my skills and confidence, I was drawn towards contemporary Expressionism. This often colourful style aligns with my desire to convey emotions and experiences through art.

As a jazz singer and writer, I’ve always enjoyed exploring life’s beauty and meaning through various forms of expression. Adding visual art to my repertoire has expanded my creative horizons in profound ways. The process of learning to draw and paint has extended my expressive reach. I can communicate ideas and emotions that words and music alone couldn’t capture.

My approach to art is deeply intertwined with my other creative pursuits. I find that the rhythms and improvisations of jazz often influence the way I apply paint to canvas. Similarly, my background in writing helps me craft visual narratives. It’s another way of documenting my impressions of my environment and the people in it. This synergy between different art forms has become a defining characteristic of my work.

A big part of my success as an artist stems from the support of other visual artists. They’ve informally mentored me by giving me feedback and coming to my exhibitions.

To everyone in their 50s (or any age, really) who’s considering taking up art, I say: go for it! It’s never too late to start learning the basics. There’s nothing like the joy and fulfillment that come from creating something with your own hands. Don’t be intimidated by an artist’s seemingly out-of-reach status, or the perceived difficulty of mastering techniques. Remember, every artist started as a beginner.

Transformation Journal

In my journey to support others in their creative endeavors, I published Transformation Journal on Amazon.

This notebook helps people tap into their creativity and document their artistic growth. Creativity is a powerful force for personal transformation.

Artist’s Archive

Another project close to my heart is the Artist’s Archive, available on Amazon.

artist's archive

This record of an artist’s work serves as both a practical tool and a source of inspiration. It enables artists to track their progress and reflect on their journey. Potentially, the records could increase the value of their work by providing provenance.

New Perspectives

As I continue to grow as an artist, I’m constantly amazed by the new perspectives and insights that painting brings to my life. Each brushstroke is an opportunity to explore, to question, and to express. The beauty of art lies not just in the finished product, but in the process of creation itself.

My advice to aspiring artists is simple: start where you are, use what you have, share with others, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Art is about exploration and self-discovery. Embrace the journey, and you’ll find that the act of creating is its own reward.

Remember, it’s never too late or too early to start your artistic journey. Whether you’re 53 like I was when I began, or any other age, the world of art is waiting for your unique voice and vision. So pick up that brush, pencil, or whatever medium calls to you, and start creating.

Your artistic adventure awaits!
