Shadows on the Wall I
In ‘The Cave’, Plato describes a group of people who have been chained in a cave since birth, facing a blank wall. Behind them is a fire, and between the fire and prisoners there is a raised walkway. Along this walkway, people carry various objects which cast shadows on the wall in front of the prisoners.
The prisoners can only see these shadows cast on the wall in front of them. They are unaware of the true objects casting the shadows, and they mistake the shadows for reality.
