Annie

I drew Annie in charcoal and graphite on paper based on her obituary photo in the Los Angeles Times. 

This photo struck me as the quintessential pose of a jazz singer: eyes closed, snapping her fingers, and a smile on her face. 

The emotion and movement of music is expressed in the folds of her dress draping from her outstretched arm. I kept the shape of her hand on the microphone loose and transparent to symbolise her soulfulness.
