Jazz Portraits - Billie Holiday

€400.00

Out of stock

Loosely based on Robin Carson's 1940 photograph of Billie Holiday, I drew this portrait in charcoal.

The gardenia is exaggerated to contrast with the difficulties Billie Holiday faced as a Black artist in America and the personal tragedies she experienced through her life. The charcoal is scored across her chest to express her scars.

For all that, I emphasised the determination in her expression to overcome everything with Jazz singing.
